Belknap Neighborhood Population
Clancy Street Ministries is part of the Belknap Lookout neighborhood of northeast Grand Rapids. The
Belknap area is a working class low-income neighborhood with a great diversity of cultures and incomes.
Lookout hill has some higher income folks as well as housing and as you come down into the valley of
Belknap the incomes drop as well as the quality of housing. The homes in the neighborhood are 58%
renter occupied and 30% homeowner occupied with 11% being vacant. The total population according to
the 2000 census was 4,234 in 1,566 households. Of those households 25 % were married couples, 26 %
were single headed families and about 36 % were single persons with 12 % being unrelated folks living in
a household. The children in the neighborhood live 53 % in single headed households and 47 % in couple
households. Racially we have 53% white which is less than the 1990 census and we have 16 % Hispanic
and 23% black which are both increases since 1990.
Economically, 30% of those older than 25 do not have a diploma, and 27% of the residents live below the
poverty line which is a decrease of 9% from the 90 census. We have 31% of our 0-5 year olds and 25%
of our 5-17 year olds living below the poverty level. Roughly two thirds of our folks between the ages of
16 and 65 are employed with our unemployment rate at 9.7
